The design of the Communitech Co-working Hub is inspired by urban design and specifically how communities and neighborhoods are created. The layout echo’s the hexagonal street plan of the old city of Grammichele, Italy.

Like the city, the hub will have a central social node where the main streets will intersect and social activities
along the circulation and the intersections. The area under contract is separated by a central atrium, creating a north side that is public and a southern one that is more private. The design also incorporates a bridge to connect the two sides of the building,

Grammichele:

Located in Sicily, Italy, the town Grammichele rose after 1693, year of a devastating earthquake that had destroyed the ancient suburb called d”Occhiolà”. The new suburb was designed by architect Michele da Ferla. The urban layout is based on Renaissance radial models and has a regular hexagon as its basis. Three axes (Via Roma, Via Cavour and Corso Vittorio Emanuele) connect the midpoints of the hexagon’s sides. From air it is a perfect geometric symbol, the streets a series of concentric hexagons. Grammichele is divided into six wards, each with its own piazza. at the center where the six main avenues meet, is the paved central square, also hexagonal. This accent urban planning methodology can create more social interactions, making nodes of social hierarchy. Public spaces are associated with every intersection between the main roads. New cities started adopting similar planning ideas by implementing central nodes, public spaces at intersections, and wide circulation through the center.
